A favorite event of my summer days is to sit at our kitchen table, eat breakfast, read, and pray. Facing south I see
hummingbirds come and go, goldfinches fly past, and an odd assortment of dragonflies, butterflies, hawks, and
multiple birds. The glory of God's creation is stunning. The natural beauty of the parsonage backyard has been
enhanced by this glorious summer blessed by heavy rains and bountiful sun.
The psalmist cries out, "When I consider the work of your hands - who am I that you are mindful (care about) me?"
Jesus promises us that while God cares for the birds of the field and clothes the lilies, He cares much more for me
and all of His human creation. I see the vivid beauty of a yellow and black goldfinch and I'm reminded that God
clothes them - why should I worry about clothing? I see hummingbirds come and go from a feeder and remember
that they survived for centuries without the benefit of being fed by humans - why should I worry about food? (from
Matthew 6:25-32)
In Matthew, from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus highlights this teaching with several verses which were used in
this summer's Vacation Bible School - GoldRush - here at Pilgrim.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break
in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and
where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Matthew 6:19-21.
A strong reminder that while our physical needs are most evident, our greatest responsibilities and gifts are
spiritual.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you
as well.
Matthew 6:33
God cares for us - if we seek Him first, other things we seek will come our way by His grace and provision.
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Matthew 7:7
Jesus encourages us to pray and truly seek Him and the truly important desires of our heart's will be met in ways He
sees fit. Jesus then quietly reminds us - don't worry - tomorrow has enough worries of its own. Don't worry, your
heavenly Father will care for you!
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough
trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves
break in and steal. But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and
steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21
